Gates McVey Butz Institutional Construction is currently lifting three story tilt-wall panels into place at the Lee County School District dual-school project in Cape Coral. Each tilt-wall panel weighs approximately 100,000 pounds.
The"tilt-up" method of construction has grown vastly in popularity with the institutional market in the past few years. This is due in part to the rapid turn around time for a project using the method, and also the finished look and quality that strong concrete walls provide. The process includes casting concrete walls horizontally on the building floor slab or separate casting slab. Then once hardened, slabs are lifted and "tilted" with a crane and set on prepared foundations to form the exterior walls of the given building.
After last summer's resounding success of simultaneously constructing five design- build school additions for the Lee County School District, Gates McVey Butz was excited to utilize their expertise again on the dual schools project. John Hayes, Chief Operating Officer for Gates McVey Butz is a tilt-wall enthusiast, "The efficiency and rapid turnaround that tilt-wall can provide is unparalleled in this sector of the market." Hayes commented.
The 40 acre Cape Coral campus located at the corner of Skyline Blvd. and Trafalgar Parkway is comprised of Challenger Middle School and Elementary School "Y". The schools are being simultaneously constructed by Gates McVey Butz utilizing two different design firms. Gates McVey Butz is working with BRPH Architects-Engineers, Inc. on Challenger Middle School and RS&H Architects & Engineers on Elementary School "Y". The two architects on one site adds another element of complexity to this unique project.
Challenger Middle School has a total of 130, 813 square feet with a free standing Gymnasium of 28,778 square feet. While Elementary School "Y" has a total of 122,244 square feet and a free standing P.E. Building of 1,013 square feet. Combined, the schools will accommodate approximately 2,400 students. The overall project cost is approximately $50 Million with a 13 month construction duration. Once completed, the site will be fully landscaped with a track encircling the regulation size Soccer Field, a Softball Field with bleachers and dugout; and also an isolated kinder play area.
